Dorian Gray
A
stunningly handsome and charismatic young man, he was Basil’s muse and the man
that inspired his magnum opus. Dorian Gray quickly fell under the influence of
Lord Henry Wotton after meeting him. He was naïve and impressionable, and found
comfort in Henry’s paradoxical philosophies. He became extremely concerned with
his beauty and pursued pleasure, forsaking his morality in the process.
Lord Henry
Wotton
A young
nobleman and friend to Basil, Henry had a charming wit that spoke of his morals
and ethics which he imparted upon others, especially Dorian Gray. He criticised
Victorian society and encouraged Hedonistic desires. Henry played an important
role in Dorian’s “development”.
Basil
Hallward
An artist
and friend to Dorian Gray and Lord Henry Wotton, he became obsessed with Dorian
subsequent to meeting him at a party. Dorian’s beauty helped him understand
art, which he painted a fabulous portrait of the young man.
Sybil Vane
A talented
but poor actress, Sybil fell in love with Dorian soon after meeting him. Her
love for him comprised her ability to act and his rejection led her to commit
suicide in her state of grief.
